Make your Summer enjoyable and safe!

Summer is officially here!

This is my favorite season for many reasons: barbecues with friends, swimming, gardening in warm weather to name a few.  To make sure that this summer is safe and enjoyable, consider some of these tips and habits!

From mosquitoes to bee stings, insects can be quite the nuisance! Keep your evening backyard picnics more pleasant by lighting citronella tiki torches and candles. They aren’t foolproof, but they do help some.

Make sure to keep calamine lotion handy for those irritating bug bites. Allergic to bees or yellow jackets? Make sure your have doctor prescribe an epipen–and don’t let it expire!

Sun-Keeping safe from it while enjoying it!

Limit your exposure to direct sunlight between the hours of 10 and 4, if you can. That doesn’t mean you have to stay inside though. Consider wearing hats, long-sleeve UV shirts that keep you cool and safe in the direct sun. Whenever possible, offer a shady spot for kids and pets to play and lounge. Children and elderly overheat quickly–keep an eye on them. If heat gets too high, invite your pets into air conditioning if possible, and offer caged pets like rabbits water bottles that have been frozen over night to lie beside.

Swimming Pools

Have a swimming pool? Invest in a decent skimmer. If you skim your pool daily or every couple days, it’ll keep your filters cleaner if you have an in-ground pool.  Don’t assume that your pool needs the same amount of chemicals weekly–test and adjust the pH before you add the chlorine though.

There are a lot of ways to keep your family and friends safe while hosting your neighborhood pool party. The Red Cross has a thorough list of essential things to stay safe, but perhaps the most important one is to teach your children to always have an adult with them when swimming.

I preach hydration a lot, because it’s important. But during these warm months, there’s a plethora of delicious fruits and veggies just chock full of water! I love a cold glass of water after weeding in the sunshine, but I also love a slice of watermelon! Cucumbers and Watermelons are 96% water, with blueberries and pineapple just 1% behind. Eating a cup of fruit with your lunch means you’re that much more hydrated.

Make your summer fun, enjoyable, and safe with these few tips!
