This has to be the aspect of forms that strikes me as incredibly tedious: repair fields. I don’t mean performing the cleaning or repair work on the backflow prevention device – but the recording of it on paper forms. Those tiny boxes can be infuriating! What about those “describe” fields that are just big enough for two words? I don’t get it. How are you supposed to fit anything in there if you’re hand-writing the forms?

Are recorded repairs for the customer, the water purveyor, or the backflow tester?
While water purveyors create the repair fields on their forms, I’m going to argue that this isn’t just to stay compliant. Yes, water utilities use the information to report the basics to the State and EPA, but I think recording repair and maintenance work is often more useful to the tester and customer.
If a backflow tester repeatedly notices that a specific make-and-model of a device has faulty springs, or if o-rings are being repeatedly replaced on a specific customer’s devices, a backflow tester can keep track of this. When installing a new device, he (or she!) may specifically avoid the make-and-model of a device he knows often fails. Or, on the customer who continuously needs his backflow preventer cleaned or repaired, the tester may suggest a strainer to provide better service.
In the end, accurate recording not only helps the water purveyor, but saves the customer and backflow tester loads of headaches, as well.
